I only gave the Hound of Rowan 4 stars since, in the books that follow it, Neff has shown how he can be such a cleaver and creative writer that it makes this one seem that he could have added just a bit more to this first book to get it to The Hound of Rowan book level of a creativity and intrest of those that come after (but not a boring book by any means, still /5().

Having said that, The Hound of Rowan is an entertaining book (the first of a series) to read. Author, Henry Neff has worked hard to create a world that exists apart from "normal" humans just like Rick Riordan succeeded in doing with Percy Jackson.4/5.

If it had turned out Rowan Academy was actually the source of evil and 'the enemy' the good guys I'd have given the book a much higher rating. For the first two parts of the book the atmosphere reminded me more of the Shadow Grail Series by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edgehill than of Harry Potter/5().
